222 of 222 Precincts Reporting
CandidatePartyVotesPercent
Gil Cedillo(D)11,24423%
Judy Chu(D)15,33832%

RESULTS: LA Times | CA Secretary of State | LA County

11:50: Calitics says Judy Chu has declared victory. 86% reporting: Chu still at 33%, Cedillo 24%, and Pleitez 14%. Betty Chu leads the GOP field, with 10%. Bring on Chu vs. Chu, in July!
11:30: With 76% reporting, it's now Chu with 33%, Cedillo 24%, Pleitez 14%.
10:55: This isn't over yet. With 46% reporting, Chu is at 35% and Cedillo is at 23%. Pleitez's share is increasing too, up to 12%.
10:38: Picking up speed now; with 32% reporting, Chu leads 38% to 21%.
10:15: Ganja break at LA County is over: now we're up to 16% reporting, with a little narrowing but still a big Chu edge, 40% to 19%.
9:30: Still nothing more to tell you about CA-32, but there's a barnburner going on in the runoff for the Los Angeles City Attorney. Carmen Trutanich leads Jack Weiss 52-48, with 12% reporting.
8:45: We're finally seeing some action. With 10% reporting, Judy Chu is at 42%, with Cedillo far behind with 17%. Betty Chu is in third at 13% (consolidating most of what little Republican vote exists in this district), and Pleitez is next at 8%.
8:18: We've still got bupkus from CA-32, but there are over 1 million votes tabulated statewide on the six ballot measures. Props 1A through 1E are all failing, mostly by greater than 40-60 margins, but Prop 1F (no pay raises for legislators if there's a deficit) is passing with 77%.
7:52 Pacific: We're going to be doing a half-assed liveblog of CA-32 tonight. Polls close shortly, at 8 p.m. Check back periodically for updates!

No Pleitez?
I think he was my favorite out of the 3, but between Chu or Cedillo I'd much rather see Chu win.

Tell you what
If the initial round of results makes it look like he's genuinely going to be a factor, I'll add a row for him.

O/T:
Philadelphia looks to have almost just elected its first black DA, a job previously held by Arlen Specter and Ed Rendell.

This is just the primary, but the general is really just a formality.

In any case, Seth Williams got my vote.

Who won the judicial races?

[ Parent ]
Too many to list
All results are here. At quick glance, it looks like LGBT club endorsements fared well. The Philadelphia bar association also has its view.

[ Parent ]
10%
Judy Chu is up huge on Cedillo 41-17, though who knows what part of the district these votes are coming from.

Chu's ahead with 42%
according to L.A. County. Only about 10% of precincts in.

Chu v. Chu seems very possible. . .

and in a mostly Hispanic district, at that

Up against
this guy:

let's face it, the wheels have fallen off the "social security" wagon, or system, if you will. it's time for a new wagon! social security was formed in the 1930's. picture a 1935 studebaker. yes, the company no longer exists, even though it had a fine product. social security started out that way also, a fine product. but with the constant meddleing of congress over the years, it's now projected to go out of business too! that's why it's time to get a new car-system, ok? think of that 1935 studebaker and trading it in for a new, 2009 ford!

[ Parent ]
Ford?!?!?! LOL!!!!!
The only thing funnier would have been if he had said "Chrysler" instead of Ford.

if it's Chu vs Chu in the runoff election,
will they be listed in alphabetical order on that ballot?

[ Parent ]
The top vote getter from each party
I don't know how ballot order is chosen.

[ Parent ]
Alphabetical order by last name, regardless of party.
Example: SD-26 returns page.

[ Parent ]
And if the last name is the same
then I believe they will go in alphabetical order by first name.

[ Parent ]
Wonder if there will be many
people picking the first Chu (Betty) and not the one they actually meant to.

Is party affiliation listed?

[ Parent ]
Yes, it is
So probably no worries.

[ Parent ]
I thought California randomized the order
and then, at least in statewide races, rotated their random order throughout the state.  This is what they did in the recall election with that huge list anyway.

[ Parent ]
Well
for the regular statewide races, the Democrat is listed first, even if the Republican won that race, followed by the Republican, and then candidates from the minor parties listed in alphabetical order by party name: American Independent, Green, Libertarian, Peace and Freedom. For examples, see the 2006 election results.

[ Parent ]
Wrong
Since 1975, California law has mandated randomizing the ballot order with a lottery.

http://www.law.stanford.edu/pu...

Just because they displayed the results that way on the SoS website, doesn't mean that's the ballot looked that way.

[ Parent ]
Randomized, then rotated by Assembly district
For example, the 2008 Presidential candidate appeared in 6 different orders depending on the Assembly district:

[ Parent ]
All I'm saying
Is that the ganja down at the L.A. Board of Elections must be some primo shit.

Pass the dutchie...
'Pon the lef' han' side...

[ Parent ]
I hate that song. Hate, hate, hate it.

[ Parent ]
Oh boy.
Weiss better pull it out.  We don't need a guy who calls himself an "environmental lawyer" who's DEFENDED the polluters in environmental cases.

Well
it worked for Alice Kryzan, didn't it? (Oh, wait... it didn't.)

[ Parent ]
Beat me to it...
First rule of comedy is timing... I made the mistake of trying to remember Rhonda Ross's name! That crazy lady got herself banned from DKos for creating a sockpuppet account.

[ Parent ]
You know who else did that?
Alice Kryzan... who defended the Love Canal polluters.

And another really low-rent candidate named Rhonda Ross.

[ Parent ]
If that were the only thing...
I might be OK with it.  But so you know, Trutanich's law firm is the firm that represents the NRA.  Now, he says it's his partner who does those cases, but sheesh, the law firm only has 2 partners, him and the NRA guy!

Plus, as a UCLA person, we can't stand that Trutanich says he's tough on crime, but was also the USC football team's personal lawyer who somehow got all those cases against their players dropped, whether it was for rape, drugs, assault, etc.

[ Parent ]
Doesn't bother me
John Adams, after all, defended the perpetrators of the Boston Massacre.  Everyone is entitled to representation.

[ Parent ]
Well, looks like Judy Chu
will be the next member of Congress from California.
