OH-17: Ryan Won't Be Strickland's Running Mate

From Roll Call:

Rep. Tim Ryan (D) will run for re-election to his House seat next year instead of running for lieutenant governor in Ohio, reversing what had been widespread speculation that he was headed for the exits.

A Ryan aide confirmed a local report Monday that the four-term Democrat would not return to the Buckeye State to be Gov. Ted Strickland's (D) running mate on the statewide ticket in 2010.

"It's definite," Ryan told a local newspaper. "I just don't see a scenario in the near future where I'll be leaving" Congress.

This seems like a pretty unexpected about-face. Earlier reports suggested that Ryan's candidacy was pretty much a done deal. In the end, we keep a pretty good Rep. in the House, and Governor Ted has to keep searching for a new running mate to replace Lee Fisher.

He should have run for Senate, imho
We don't know all of the circumstances here, but I think he should have gone for Senate.  This is too bad because Ryan would be a great senator, and he likely won't have the chance to run for a long time now.

Kind of surprising, but maybe Strickland wants a running mate from a more GOP area, as he is from Athens and Ryan is from Youngstown.

Actually, Strickland is from Lisbon..
Which is a swing area, but pretty close geographically to Ryan's Youngstown.

He'll be governor after Strickland
Probably figures he doesn't need to be Lt. Gov. for a term to move up in four years.  It will be good to keep him in the House, at least for a little longer.

Just a question...
Why so much love for Ryan?  He's awful on many issues ranging from abortion to guns.

Cause when he is on our side, he fights harder than most
Go look up his speech on the potential of the draft on youtube.

He's progressive enough, and guaranteed to not to compromise the principals he has.

Define "aweful" on guns
This isn't one of those issues where the core part of the Democratic Party is united.  I don't have a problem with people owning guns.

Economics and labor

[ Parent ]
He is on the socially conservative side
But with big Democratic majorities, his views on those issues won't matter on any of the bills that are voted on.

He is much better on economic issues though than most of his colleagues.  Plus he's viewed as an up-and-comer.

While his personal views on abortion are disappointing, I don't mind his gun views either.  What works for Ohio works for Ohio.

[ Parent ]
Well,
Come to Northeast Ohio and ask the locals what their stances on abortion and guns are.  Remember that this is an area that Hillary Clinton dominated in the primaries.

[ Parent ]
When you really stop to think about it
Your second sentence is beyond surreal. But that's a discussion for another day...

[ Parent ]
Last I checked
Hillary was pretty liberal on abortion and guns.  I suspect that's not the reason those voters voted for her over Obama.

[ Parent ]
They voted for her because they knew her
and Bill and liked their Presidency.  And because the Ohio Democratic establishment supported her.
A few of them in the Appalachia region voted for Clinton because of race.

[ Parent ]
But:
Is the Appalachian region of Ohio a "racist area," as John Murtha would have called it?

[ Parent ]
Much of it is
I made calls for Obama to that region (SW PA) in the primary and the general.  There was an enormous amount of open racism there.

I don't think Youngstown and the Rust Belt areas in NE Ohio voted for Clinton based on race, though.  A few did sure, but most of them I think preferred a known quantity who was supported by the Dem establishment.

He's also bad on the estate tax
Voted to repeal it.

[ Parent ]
Lots of millionaires in Youngstown I take it
Suuuureeee....

[ Parent ]
Totally unacceptable
The estate tax should be increased substantially for the wealthy.

[ Parent ]
It should be damn near 100%
And the top tax rate should be close to 90% like it used to.

[ Parent ]
If that happened...
Then everyone affected by that rate would just transfer it to a relative or a family friend on their death bed so it wouldnt legally be a part of their 'estate'. I guess the govt could find a way to get rid of that legal loophole but maybe itd be tricky. And I think a rate that high isnt practical. Id hate to be an employee of a small business owner who just died and has to have 90-100% of their estate forked over to the govt. I think even the unions would be against that because thered be a serious fear of layoffs and salary/wage/benefit cuts.

[ Parent ]
To clarify
I'd still support a high exclusion.  Maybe the first $1 mill or so at either no estate tax or a a low rate.

And we did once have a reasonably strict estate tax like I mention and what you claim - people transferring proterty, cash, etc. on their deathbed happened infrequently.  Facts are people are naturally greedy and want to die with their bags of money.  They won't transfer it even if they know they are near death.  I've seen this first hand.

[ Parent ]
Gifts within a certain timeframe,
within 3 or 5 years of death (forget which), are included in the estate to cover that loophole.

Re: Ryan on abortion
As constituent of Ryan, I feel incumbent to clarify something here. While Ryan has personal objections to abortion, he is actually pretty moderate about it. He's one of the people who believes the best way to stop abortion is to reduce the need for it (Hillary and Barack have advocated similar things) by increasing access to contraceptives and real sex ed (not that abstince only garbage).

Aside from the two issues you mentioned (and maybe the estate tax), Ryan is a pretty staunch progressive on almost everything else, from the environment to economics to foreign policy. And regarding the two issues you mentioned, it should be noted that the Mahoning Valley is heavily Catholic (I myself attended Catholic school but am now an agnostic) and (speaking from personal experiece) many people who are very progressive on everything else still are uneasy about abortion. As for guns, this is a hunting region. Guns are a part of life.

Jennifer Brunner for Lt Gov?
I wouldn't mind seeing Brunner drop out of the race for Senator and go for the Lt Gov job being vacated by Lee Fisher. I'm afraid she'll lose the primary, and I'd like to keep her in statewide office. She's young enough, born 1957, to look down the road at other openings in the future.

I'd be very surprised
If Gov. Strickland hasn't already approached Brunner about becoming Lt Gov in order to give Fisher an easier primary route.  Brunner would probably help Strickland attract more female voters.

[ Parent ]
If Brunner drops out
I would hope she'd seek re-election as SoS. That role is a lot more important than Lt. Gov.

[ Parent ]
I agree. Putting the apportionment board majority
at risk is not an ideal situation.  It is far from guaranteed another Democrat would win in an open-seat contest.  If Brunner stays as SoS, she could run for Governor in 2014.

[ Parent ]
This seems like the everybody-wins option
If Fisher continues to have a strong advantage over Brunner in fundraising and polling, I hope that this deal can be made.

[ Parent ]
terrific idea, I hope she'll take your advice.
Can the fundraising money she has gotten for the Senate be transferred and switched and used for the Lt Gov race? (or the SoS re-election race if she goes back to that?)

[ Parent ]
money can't be used for a state race
funds raised for a federal campaign are very restricted from that point of view...

[ Parent ]
ah, thanks, I thought there was a catch.
She'd have to start all over with her campaign fundraising if she were to switch to Lt Gov or SoS.

[ Parent ]
Not that she's raised all that much
for the Senate race so far anyway...

[ Parent ]
yeah, come on
as a statewide officeholder, she probably barely worked for that 200k.  And if she busted her ass for it, then she has no business running in the primary because that means everyone told her no and that they are supporting Fischer.

200k is really shitty for a statewide officeholder in as large of a state as Ohio.  Grassroots or not, she is a statewide officeholder, a very well known one at that considering her job as SoS in a state with many problems like Ohio.  She should be doing better.

[ Parent ]
Actually, it depends on the state
in Virginia, with no state contribution limits, you can transfer all the money you want from your federal account (it just shows up as a donation). Tom Davis bankrolled his wife's state Senate campaign that way, and Jim Moran has given over $100,000 to Brian's gubernatorial campaign.

Regardless, it's not like Brunner has raised a lot to transfer over.
