CO-Sen: Few who know Bennet mostly disapprove

PPP poll of 1,050 Colorado voters between April 17th and 19th. MoE +/-3%.

Do you approve or disapprove of Democratic Senator Michael Bennet's job performance?

Approve 34%
Disapprove 41%
Not Sure 25%

Versus various Repubs the numbers are:

Bennet 39
Ryan Frazier 35

Bennet 40
Ken Buck 34

Bennet 41
Josh Penry 34

Bob Beauprez 43
Bennet 42

I would say the fact that he trails the better know Beauprez by only a single point and leads all the others isn't all bad. He should be okay with some outreach to Dems (his waffling on EFCA has clearly hurt), indies and particularly hispanics. Though numbers like this might encourage a primary challenge from Andrew Romanoff or others.

If you've ever seen him on C-SPAN
the guy has zero personality. It's okay to be the "inoffensive, boring type" but you have to win an election before you can get away with that and become entrenched.

20 years old, male, GA-12 (home), GA-10 (school); previously lived in CA-29, CA-28, CA-23, IL-06, IL-14, GA-01.

He actually comes off quite well in person
I've seen him in smaller venues around Colorado, with anywhere from 50 to 400 people. He is energetic without being overbearing and almost always seems like the smartest person in the room.

I was NOT a Bennet supporter when he was appointed, but he's gradually winning over Democrats and some Indies around the state.

I already noted the crosstab problems with this poll in another thread, but let me say that Bennet's been getting many positive reviews, including from the Hispanic community (many of whom were irate at his appointment and the white male-centric nature of the process).

If he can raise the cash and gets no serious opponent
he can win. Maybe Pete Coors will take another shot. . .

Let's not spin this as good news...
The guy barely musters lead against completely unknown Republicans. Sure, he will have time to introduce himself... but so will Republican candidates. That's the whole point: He'll only have a few more months than these unknown Republicans will.

As for Beauprez, well, he was crushed in 2006 and is now leading an incumbent Senator. That seems to suggest Bennet has reason to worry. Especially if voters are more pro-GOP in 2010 than they are today.

The fact most people don't know who he is is not spin

Beauprez led Ritter in 2006
Until about June. He then lost by 18.

Schaffer too
He was withing a couple points of Udall for a good chunk of 2008 before losing by about 10 points.

So regarding a Primary
Is there any reason we should not be hoping Andrew Romanoff (sp?) gets in for a challenge and beats Sen. Bennett?

As in, does the guy have better electoral chops (besides having run for office before) and is he more progressive or a leader on a certain pet issue (I know for Bennett it is education)?

26, Male, Democrat, TX-26

I think Andrew Romanoff
needs to enter the race.  He is a much better Democrat than Bennet and a much better politician as well.

Polilin Penry
Is pretty dumb, he's going for Governor if anything.

Buck is already in, and Frazier soon will be. Beauprez wants to run, but the GOP doesn't seem keen on letting him blow another close race into an embarrassment.
