In 2010, Democrats need a strong candidate to run in California's 3rd Congressional District, which is rapidly trending Democratic. In 2006, Bill Durston ran against Republican Dan Lungren and lost by 21.5 percent. In 2008, Durston ran again. This time, he came within 5.5 percent of winning and kept Lungren's vote total under 50%.

But Durston has decided not to run again. And with the DCCC targeting the district, we desperately need a candidate who can step in and finish the job that Bill Durston started.

John Garamendi is the absolute best person to lead the battle for California's 3rd Congressional District. He has deep roots in the district - he was born and raised in Mokelumne Hill, owns a ranch there, and was elected by the voters in the district to serve in the California state legislature from 1974 to 1990.

SIGN THE PETITION

Tell John Garamendi that you want him to run for Congress in the 3rd Congressional district against Dan Lungren in 2010.

Back in 2007, when John Garamendi addressed the Amador County Democrats, he discussed his longstanding relationship with the district:

Garamendi talked briefly about his time representing Amador, Calaveras and other rural counties in the State Assembly for two years and for fourteen years as a State Senator. He recalled that one of the first bills he introduced was about a water ditch in Amador Co. The local connection is "very important to those of us living in these rural areas" says Central Committee Vice Chair Randy Bayne. As evidence, he noted that every year hundreds of local residents take a trip out to the Touch the Earth Ranch in Mokelumne Hill for the Garamendi Basque Barbeque.

Garamendi will be holding his 32nd Annual Basque Barbeque in Calaveras County in a little over two weeks, reconnecting with the local folks who have supported him for decades. We're asking him to step up once again to fight for Amador and Calaveras Counties by running for Congress in District 3.

Not gonna happen
He's supposed to announce today that he will run for the open 10th seat.

How close are the 3rd and 10th districts?
Because he lives in the 10th.

And while there's no rule against representing where you don't live, it's...not a good idea, in my opinion.  I'd count it against a candidate.

I am waiting to see whether Durston will get more traction, though.

By the way, when I first read your diary title, I was thinking, "Isn't this guy already running for lieutenant governor and CA-10?  What more do you want him to do?"

running for *governor
I mean.

Not particularly close
The 10th is a suburban East Bay district.  The 3rd is a suburban Sacramento District, with some rural mountain counties attached.  While it's not quite as bad as McClintock, the carpetbagger label would justly apply.

I dunno
the poster does say that Garamendi owns a ranch in the district.  How much time does he usually spend out there??

Well if he did represent them in the Assembly..
Perhaps he has enough ties.  Maybe it's CA-10 where he's more of the carpetbagger...

Garamendi doesn't live in the 10th
The 10th is a mostly suburban district in the East Bay Area. At its most eastern, exurban edge, it abuts the 3rd, which then continues eastward to the Nevada state line, encompassing part of Sacramento and the rural Gold Country.

Garamendi's ranch is in Gold Country, about dead center of the 3rd.

His house, on the other hand, is in Walnut Grove, a town of about 600, which sits on the boundary line between the two districts. Part of his property is in the 10th; his house is in the 3rd.

From yesterday's SF Chron:

But Garamendi acknowledged that while he and his wife of 43 years own property and have roots in the 10th District, they are not residents within its borders.

"My front yard is in the district, our bedroom is not," he said, while also noting that it is not a requirement of a congressional candidate to live within the district he or she represents.

Oh thats just classic
Classic, classic stuff. His yard is in one district and his house in another. I know the mapmakers didnt intentionally do this, but its so odd how it ended up this way. Its not like its a very, very small urban district. It would be funny as hell if there was a residency requirement law in CA and Garamendi ended up just buying a trailer and putting it in his yard. Guess thatd settle things! And I do remember, a while back, looking at Walnut Grove's lines at Govtrack (guess i was bored one night) and noticed how odd it was that that small little town was split between two districts.

Id like to see
A skit on the Comedy Channel (or anywhere) where "CA-10 residents" are 'outraged' that Garamendi is a carpetbagger since his house isnt technically in CA-10.
