VA-05: Goode Files

The Hill:

Republicans appear to have another repeat candidate in 2010, as former Rep. Virgil Goode (R-Va.) has filed to reclaim the seat he lost in November.

Goode filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) - a move that allows him to raise money for the race - but he has not publicly said what his 2010 plans are. Regardless, the race is sure to be a top GOP target.

Former Reps. Bill Sali (R-Idaho) and Steve Chabot (R-Ohio) have also filed to run for the seats they lost in 2008. While Chabot is all-in, Sali has not officially stated whether he will follow through with the campaign.

As the article says, filing a statement of candidacy may just be a keeping-the-door-open move. But Goode seems to have at least one foot through the portcullis. Last month, he was seen staging absurd events where he was handing out giant checks to institutions which received earmarks in the most recent omnibus spending bill, even though he's of course no longer in Congress and didn't vote on the legislation which disburses this money!

So this makes me feel there are better-than-even odds that Goode will pull the trigger on a rematch. And personally, I think Perriello's better off going up against a retread rather than a fresh face.

Is this Goode?
[y/n]

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

Beyond Goode
It's Grreat.

[ Parent ]
I believe you mean Greate.

[ Parent ]
LOL
But what about the Frosted Flakes endorsement?

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
Tough hold
One of the tougher holds for Democrats in '10.  In fact, I see only ID 1 and MD 1 as tougher holds.  Can't count on the turnout in places like UVA we got last time.

Agreed
But incumbency is worth alot.

[ Parent ]
What about AL-02 and AL-05?
I'd think those are also pretty tough.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
Certainly those are the top five most at risk

[ Parent ]
Disagree
AL 5 was represented by Cramer for decades.  AL 2 is in the top 10, but Bright is pretty popular.

FL 8 and either VA 2 or CO 4 (I can't decide which) round out my top five.

[ Parent ]
Yes on FL-08
I think too many are overlooking this one and assuming it's safer than it really is.  Yes, the district is growing more favorable, but the republican bench is VERY deep in the district.  Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty looks like the frontrunner to take on Grayson and he'll be tough.

[ Parent ]
Obama won FL-8
And very nearly CO-4. And Grayson and Markey both won by larger than expected margins, albeit against crazy incumbents. Probably in my top ten but certainly not as high as those previously mentioned.

[ Parent ]
AL-02
Bright won by the skin of his teeth, and that was with Black turnout through the roof for Obama. Somehow I can't imagine that ole Bobby will make much effort to reach out to the AA community.

22, Democrat, AZ-01
Peace. Love. Gabby.

[ Parent ]
And he won against an unpopular opponent too.
primary-losing Republican candidate Harri Anne Smith endorsed Bright over Love, IIRC.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
Probably top 5
But Griffith and Bright both seem to be good fits and have given republicans next to nothing to run against them on.

[ Parent ]
MD-01 won't be too tough if Harris is their nominee again (*crosses fingers*)

Male, 23, DC-At Large

[ Parent ]
this is not that tough
a district, Democrats usually represent it and Perrielo ran a great campaign to come from being 67-30 behind in August to winning, only this time he'll have tons more money and a stronger profile. Goode is a bigoted, ultra-conservative prick.

Still the district was 51-48, how the heck do you think that's harder than MD-01, or ID-01, or Al-02 for that matter, or NY-29, or even VA-02.

Call no man happy until he is dead-Aeschylus

[ Parent ]
Exactly
Even Goode was a Dem when first elected to the district.

More proof...
...that sometimes the big tent needs to contract some.

Ovid Badde?

One of he greatest puns in the history of pundom

Male, 23, DC-At Large

[ Parent ]
If not one of THE greatest........

Male, 23, DC-At Large

[ Parent ]
?
What are you guys talking about?

[ Parent ]
'Tis a reference to the Roman poet Ovid, as opposed to the Roman poet Virgil

Male, 23, DC-At Large

[ Parent ]
Well, two things
(1) IIRC, Octavius didn't like Ovid, but did like Vergil.
(2) It's technically "Vergil", or rather, "Publius Vergilius Maro", I think.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
Doesn't have the same ring,
Publius Vergilius Maro bonus,
Publius Ovidius Naso malus.

Though technically, the Romans didn't have spaces, punctuation, or lower-case letters in many of their inscriptions, so it's * technically * PUBLIUSVERGILIUSMAROBONUSPUBLIUSOVIDIUSNASOMALUS.

[ Parent ]
Sorry to tell you
But it's Virgil with an "i". Eight years of Latin here.

[ Parent ]
Vergil or Virgil both count, according to WIkipedia
and according to my (four years) of Latin.

And his Roman name was Publius Vergilius Maro.  Which is why I say Vergil is the "proper" translation of his name.

For the record, mine was a Futurama reference

Good
I think Goode is their weakest candidate.

Tom has been one of the best freshmen so far. Pro-stimulus, budget, cramdown, Fair Pay and pretty much all the rest in a much tougher district then others racking up worse voting records. Also, he isn't a Blue Dog.

It will be a very tough race though, but again it's going to be the House race I focus most on.

Save Our Asses
Periello is, to me, one of the most critical Democrats to protect.  Bright, Minnick, and Kravotil may have more Republican districts, but we have the most to lose from losing Periello as he's been prety progressive.  Those who can should send him some dough.
