NY-20: Can a progressive Dem win an "Obamacan" district?

NY Presidential Results 2008

Contrary to conventional wisdom, New York's 20th Congressional District is not as "blood red" and "heavily conservative" as most people would assume. Barack Obama narrowly defeated John McCain within the seat's boundaries, winning solid margins in Columbia, Dutchess, and Essex Counties, as well as narrowly carrying Otsego, Saratoga, Warren, and Washington Counties.

Colin Neal :: NY-20: Can a progressive Dem win an "Obamacan" district?
Obama (D) McCain (R)
Columbia 17,556 (55.6%) 13,337 (42.4%)
Delaware 9,462 (46.4%) 10,524 (51.6%)
Dutchess 71,060 (53.7%) 59,628 (45.1%)
Essex 10,030 (55.9%) 7,913 (42.6%)
Greene 9,850 (44.1%) 12,059 (54.0%)
Otsego 13,570 (52.0%) 12,026 (46.0%)
Rensselaer 39,753 (53.7%) 32,840 (32.8%)
Saratoga 56,645 (50.9%) 52,855 (47.5%)
Warren 16,281 (50.5%) 15,429 (47.9%)
Washington 12,741 (49.5%) 12,533 (48.7%)

The district still contains a fairly hefty GOP registration advantage, with 196,118 (43%) of its voting populace enrolled as Republicans and only 125,486 (26%) enrolled as Democrats, with the remaining balance unaffiliated or in third parties. But even here the GOP edge is gradually eroding; when the 20th was first drawn in 2002, there were 195,525 Republicans (45%) and 104,028 (22%) Democrats, a net gain of 21,458 Democrats and 593 Republicans over the past seven years. Folks, Democratic growth in voter enrollment is outpacing the Republicans by a ratio of 36 to 1 within the 20th District! Demographically, this is not the same district  that John Sweeney or Gerald B.H. Solomon once represented.

Looking at the statistics, why on earth should we want to forfeit a Democratic-trending swing district to the likes of right-wing Republicans like John Faso, Betty Little, or Steve Saland, who stand to vote against much of the agenda that many of the district's voters backed so passionately only two months ago?

Doubt it.
"Democratic growth in voter enrollment is outpacing the Republicans by a ratio of 36 to 1 within the 20th District!"

You could say that about many places in the United States, it is a tribute to the Obama campaign, which really kicked ass at registering voters.

But more to the point, Obama barely won a district in a state where he spent a lot of money and John McCain spent next to nothing.  Using the presidential numbers are far from the reality of a low-turnout competitive special election we will be facing.

neither campaigns
spent anything in New York. Obama contested the state neither in the primary or in the general.

Got a source? I know DK had a diary every week...
On where they spent money on media advertising... But I don't want to dig through three months of diaries looking for it.

[ Parent ]
No source but I agree with Ark
Commonsense suggests it would have been a waste of money.

Once John McCain cut out of Wisconsin...
Obama had it won.  Still, Advertising played non-stop till election day and he blew him out here.  Common sense would have said he were wasting money after a certain point, but they kept playing.  Anyone live in a deep blue state not see many commercials this election?

[ Parent ]
Wisconsin is a traditional swing state
Only PUMA types seriously thought Obama would win NY by anything less than twenty points.

I remember
I remember the Dkos diaries on where the TV money was being spent.  Obama wasn't spending TV money in NY.  Perhaps there were other expenditures for organizing, but I really don't think he spent much on NY (although probably more than McCain FWIW).

One more thought
Obama did spend a fair amount on national advertising, which McCain basically ignored.  So, to that extent, he did much more advertising in NY than McCain.

Frankly it might be worth taking a DINO that can win
To stop any momentum Repubs might get from winning a seat back so early in the cycle.

Terrible pick
Last I looked Gillibrand had the lowest Progressive Punch score of any of the Democtratic House members from NY.  She already has a primary opponent (Carolyn McCarthy) based on her pro-gun stance and NRA support.  That's fine for this district but way bad statewide. Although the registration gap is only a little worse than some Long Island districts that regularly elect Democrats we have a very weak bench in this district.

Supposedly, Schumer was pushing Gillibrand.

The pick should have been either Maloney or Cuomo.  If he wanted somebody else, maybe Suozzi.  A Maffei or Massa needs at least a couple of terms in the House (and I'd want those seats safe).  I'd like Nita Lowey as a placeholder or even Louise Slaughter if we were headed in that direction.  If either were younger, she would be a terrific pick.

No, her progressive punch score isn't the lowest
McCarthy's is actually lower

RE: Gillibrand
I am actually slightly confused on this matter.

This is was from a recent article about her.

Not everyone was upset.

Alan Van Capelle, head of the Empire State Pride Agenda, the state's largest gay rights group, said Gillibrand expressed support for gay marriage and said she would support full repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act as well as the Don't Ask Don't Tell military policy.

"After talking to Kirsten Gillibrand, I am very happy to say that New York is poised to have its first U.S. Senator who supports marriage equality for same-sex couples," Van Capelle said.

Abortion rights groups also hailed her selection.

"Like her predecessor Hillary Clinton, Rep. Gillibrand has shown herself to be an ally and advocate for New York and for women across the country, co-sponsoring legislation to ensure access to and funding for contraception," said NARAL Pro-Choice New York president Kelli Conlin.

If she is as conservative as some here are saying, I am then puzzled by these two endorsements and comments.

The gun issue doesn't bother me, as I would describe myself as socially libertarian and fiscally progressive, but a couple of the other matters did concern me, especially given that we are dealing with the a position representing the entire state of New York.

Hopefully, she'd grow on immigration, but pro-choice, pro-gun, pro-gay would be a start for me.

And, yes the thought of endangering her house seat is worrisome.  I wonder if the governor isn't doing this partly just to exercise his authority to let people know he has that authority, exercising it for the sake of exercising it.

Issues
I too don't understand what issues she is so moderate or conservative on, other than gun control, which is a minor issue IMHO and I'm pretty moderate on the issue anyway.

[ Parent ]
Immigration supposedly
because she ran away from Eliot Spitzer when he proposed his drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants plan in 2007.

But like everyone who isn't Hispanic ran away from him on that.

Gun Control
The party's platform is a nuanced position.  There's certainly room under the tent for pro-gun Democrats.

I'm personally opposed to federal gun control--I think it should be a state issue, with the ATF being used to help states enforce their laws.

[ Parent ]
I agree.
Though I lean pro-gun control, I agree it should be a state issue. In states like Wyoming and Montana, guns are good to have, such as for recreational hunting and for defense because police services can be miles away. California and Massachusetts and New York City are denser and guns are not necessary for survival.

other issues
she positioned herself very much in favor of the war, was the only state Democrat to vote in favor of the Republican funding bill...

she actually was pretty bad on gay rights until she spoke to gay rights groups yesterday, tweaking her positions.

she was pro-FISA, and had an awful vote on a vote related to foreclosures.

she uses pretty tough anti-immigration language (beyond the issue of driver licenses).
