FL-Sen: Jeb Won't Run

by: James L.

Tue Jan 06, 2009 at 3:55 PM EST

Hallelujah!

Jeb Bush: "After thoughtful consideration, I've decided not to run for the United States Senate in 2010. "While the opportunity to serve my state and country during these turbulent and dynamic times is compelling, now is not the right time to return to elected office.

What a relief. With Jeb's name off the table, the open seat of retiring GOP Sen. Mel Martinez is now truly up for grabs.

Children by the millions wait for Alex Sink.

Great song
Amazing how there's a Big Star reference for every political situation...

I never travel too far without a little Big Star.
Believe me, it brings me no small level of satisfaction to see someone finally pick up on one of my Chilton references (in this case via Westerberg). They're definitely a desert island band.

just bought "pleased to meet me" reissue
and it's very good!  i do love every big star and replacements album and i appreciate the reference.

Great news
I'm somewhat wondering if this might be the unofficial end of the current Bush dynasty.

Unfortunately I think
It may be just the opposite. Jeb may have passed on this race for a shot at Obama in 2012. 4 years from now, he may be able to overcome the Bush name in which cas he'd be an attractive presidental candidate.

[ Parent ]
I think it's going to take more than 4 years ...
...to forget Bush-43.  I mean it took 8 years to forget how bad Bush-41 was, and he was only mediocre, not horrific.

Jeb will lay out a few years and make some cash, then either run against Bill Nelson or wait another 4 years and then run for POTUS.

[ Parent ]
If Obama's first 4 years
Are relatively mediocre, it could make the forgetting process quite easy.

Plus, we have a pretty short memory in this country

[ Parent ]
he hasn't been mediocre so far

He hasn't even been President so far

Just out of curiosity...
How'd you end up double-posting with one post spelled correctly and the other not?

[ Parent ]
what the hell?
Just noticed that when you pointed it out.  No clue.  Very bizarre.

Probably edited your post
before time was called and then clicked send again.

I'd Like to Face Bush in 2012
If Obama's first four years were terrible and Obama became extremely unpopular, I would think a guy named Bush would be one of the easiest Republicans to beat.  Four years isn't enough time to forget how much people despise the name.  I really don't think eight years is enough either, but that's more questionable, especially if the country is tiring of Democratic control.

Two Bushes down.
One to go.

Funny thing is, I met a Bush once.  No relation at all.  He's a Democrat from Tennessee.  And a modern Democrat, at that.

And I hope this Good Bush
becomes the face of the Tennessee Democratic Party someday!

My 7th grade science/8th grade history teacher
also had the last name "Bush". I don't remember her first name, and I don't think she's related either.

Funny. Another bug.
I posted at the same time as you did, and the page only says "1 new comment".

Thank God!!!
This is easily the best news of the 2010 cycle thus far. If Sink jumps into this thing, I think it's safe to say we have a better than even chance of holding both the Florida Senate seats.

Yay!
Sink is the favorite if she runs. Run Alex, Run!

Pretty much any candidate mentioned could probably win as long as Crist doesn't run and they don't get too bloodied up in a primary.

Absolutely
I say keep the pressure on Alex Sink.  The DSCC should be on the phone with her often.

[ Parent ]
What are they left with then?
Crist (doubtful), McCollum, Putnam. Who else?

Marco Rubio
And he's the only one on their side that scares me.  He's very young, Cuban-American and has already been Speaker of the State House.  Not sure he could win a primary though.

I'd be surprised is McCollum doesn't run.  He's always wanted in the senate.  Hopefully he does run.  He'd be easy for almost and Dem to beat.

[ Parent ]
Former House Speaker Marco Rubio
Very young, Hispanic, fairly conservative from what I've read about him.

[ Parent ]
He's the one I'm most concerned about
In a general election he'd be very hard to beat.  However I suspect he'd have a hard time winning a republican primary where whites makeup the overwhwlming majority of voters.

[ Parent ]
Martinez beat McCollum

[ Parent ]
True
And Martinez ran an extremely nasty campaign to do it.  He also had most of the establishment backing and Bush (still mostly popular at the time) backing him.  I doubt Rubio would have that much backing.  He wasn't even very popular with his own fellow state house repubs when he was Speaker.

[ Parent ]
Well hopefully third times a charm for McCollum

[ Parent ]
Third time?
He did win the repub Senate primary in 2000.  Then lost to Bill Nelson.

[ Parent ]
Oops
Yeah, and since we don't want him to win the general this time either that doesn't work on any level! :)

[ Parent ]
Jeb Is a Rubio Ally
FWIW, Bush is a Rubio ally, so if Rubio ran, I would think Bush backs him.

[ Parent ]
Connie Mack
I think he'd be a good candidate for them.

[ Parent ]
I thought about Mack too
and the main strike against him is that he would be 70 if he ran in 2010.  Heck, he's only 4 years younger than Bob Graham.

Sicembears means his son
Rep. Connie Mack IV (married to Rep. Mary Bono) will only be 43 in 2010.

[ Parent ]
Thanks for the clarification
I had his father on my mind for a fleeting moment, but then remembered he was a bit old.

Connie Mack IV will have served 3 terms in the House by 2010, which was the same amount of time that his father served in the House.

Hmmm, he would be an attractive candidate for the conservatives.

[ Parent ]
It'd likely force Bono to retire
A marriage between congresspersons can work because the family home is Washington. Remove that connection, and it's likely that Bono Mack would decline to stand for re-election.

Which is good news, because that seat is looking like increasingly promising territory for Democrats.

[ Parent ]
Extreme conservative?
Sounds good to me.  He only has a house seat because it's a crazy far-right district.  Bring him on.  He'd lose to almost any competant Dem statewide.

[ Parent ]
Is he as crazy-far-right as Katherine Harris?
Or is that possible?

40, male, Democrat, NC-04

[ Parent ]
Yes
But is a presentable way.  He comes across as somewhat sane, unlike Harris.  He's usually near the top of the "best looking in Congress" charts which probably helps.

[ Parent ]
His wife
is better looking.  And his wife's previous husband was a better singer.

Both for our chances to win this seat and for downticket races.

My Message To Hopeful Florida Republicans

with major hard-ons for Jeb Bush?

I'd bet there'll be some serious arm-twisting
to Jeb over the next few months to reconsider.
Any snapping sounds coming out from FL will likely be his arm bones breaking...

What a great birthday present!
