IL-Sen, IL-Gov: Statewide Recruitment Thread

No one likes Blago, but Blago doesn't seem to care. So who will run against him in the 2010 Democratic primary? And who should run against him?

And speaking of Blagojevich, soon he will appoint a replacement for Barack Obama in the United States Senate. A lot depends on who exactly he selects, of course, but do you see any notable Republicans taking a stab at the seat in 2010? Mark Kirk, perhaps?

If Blago doesn't...
Pick Lisa Madigan for Senate, and so far it looks like he won't, she should primary him in 2010. Unlike Blago, Madigan's not corrupt and she can actually win. Meanwhile, I'm still crossing my fingers that Blago picks Jan Schakowsky for Senate. But if he doesn't, I'm okay if he picks someone like Luis Guiterrez or another Congresscritter whose name does NOT end with a "Jr." (hint hint).

Yes, Virginia, there ARE progressives in Nevada!

please no guiterrez
that guy seems really shady.

schakowsky would be a good choice but her husband is a big crook. that i know to be true personally. a big enough crook that it should disqualify her unfortunately.

Really?
What's up with Guiterrez? And what's wrong with Schakowsky? Is there ANYONE who hasn't been tainted by The Chicago Machine? I guess Tammy Duckworth & Dan Seals are the only non-corrupt choices left. Ugh.

I Agree
Madigan in the Senate would be the ideal choice. As for Governor, anybody but Blago would be appropriate. I'm basing this on the fact that his vote total went down in 2006 and he may look vulnerable, so we need a stronger candidate.

I wouldn't mind
Madigan in the Senate. But her getting appointed to the seat would be riddiculous. Its such an obvious quid pro quo

Madigan and Dan Hynes
Seem like obvious choices for a primary challenge to Blago. I find it a little unusual that so many are gung-ho about Madigan and then complain about Nepotism in a Delaware thread or about Chicago-machine politics. You guys are aware that Madigan has benefitted greatly from these two things? Her dad is the Speaker of the IL House of Representatives. Mayor Daly is number one on the pecking order of Chicago Machine Politicians and while number 2 may not be close, Madigan is probably number two.

For the Senate seat, I've made my preference for Jesse Jackson Jr. known. But James I think one thing you mentioned that is absolutely correct is that this choice should be made with the assumption that Mark Kirk will run in 2010. There are only 2 IL Republicans that could win statewide, and Jim Edgar is out of politics.

a more important question
is whether the REPUBLICANS have a bench here.  who could defeat whoever gets obama's seat?

Top ten signs you're an SSPer #1: your favorite song is "Panic At Tedisco" and no one understands what you mean.

Seems like it's Mark Kirk

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

Ya, Kirk is about it
What remains of their bench in Illinois outside of Kirk are either too old (i.e. Biggert) or way too far-right (i.e. Roskam).  And even Kirk is a longshot against any halfway decent Dem.

Kirk
I would agree that Kirk would be the GOP's strongest candidate for Senate, but the question is this: does he want to run?
Kirk just increased his margin of victory against Dan Seals from '06, in a heavily Democratic year and against a better funded opponent. Basically, like it or lump it, Kirk has that IL-10 seat locked up for the rest of his career. Would he risk that to run for Senate? Even as the GOP's best shot, he would still be an underdog against any competent Democratic candidate. After all, if this race is close down the stretch, one can imagine what a late visit from Illinois's favorite son, President Obama, would do for our chances.
So my feeling is that Kirk will not run for Senate. After how hard he has worked to secure his Congressional seat, why now run and be left with a better than 50% chance of having no seat at all?

[ Parent ]
Kirk not likely to run
Kirk would have a tough time getting through a GOP primary since they are dominated with conservative voters.  Besides, I doubt that Kirk would want to give up his seat in Congress.  The others on the GOP bench would include soon-to-be former Rep. Ray Lahood, which despite JJJ's poll, could pose a significant challenge since he has downstate support and is still unknown in the Chicago burbs; State Sen. Christine Radogno the new Senate Minority leader representing a burb district; State Sen. Bill Brady representing central IL and placed 3rd in 2006 gov primary; and Chicago multimillionaire Ron Gidwitz who reformed the Chicago City College system and is friendly with mayor Daley.  Although the Dem bench has some weaknesses, overall it is much stronger.

[ Parent ]
Kirk may run
Because he could be redistricted out of his seat next time.
