NC-Sen: Hagan Opens Strong Lead in New Poll, SSP Moves Race to "Lean Dem"

by: James L.

Mon Nov 03, 2008 at 2:36 AM EST

Public Policy Polling (10/31-11/2, likely voters, 10/25-26 in parens):

Kay Hagan (D): 51 (48)
Elizabeth Dole (R-inc): 44 (45)
Christopher Cole (L): 3 (4)
(MoE: ±2.1%)

Kay Hagan has opened up a nice lead -- one that is well outside of this poll's miniscule margin of error, leading PPP's Tom Jensen to declare that Dole's "Godless Americans" attacks have "blown up in her face". Good.

In a great sign for Hagan, she leads Dole by 56-41 among early voters (63% of the sample), while Obama leads McCain by 55-45 among those who have already cast a ballot. Obama is locked in a neck-and-neck race with McCain in this state (leading by only 50-49 overall), so Hagan's strong early performance looks like it will be enough to carry her through election day. SSP is updating our rating of this race from Tossup to Lean Democratic.

I think the "Rocking Chairs" ad is responsible.
That got Kay Hagan even with Dole.
Then with "Godless", Dole panicked and shot herself in the foot.   Liddy, have you no shame?

(of course, Obama's NC work is huge with this race as well).

PPP also mentions one of the key factors.
Kay Hagan eliminated Dole's edge with Suburban voters (IIRC) and that destroyed any chance Dole had of winning a state-wide race in North Carolina.

I like the fact
that Hagan seems to have enough of a lead that the Republicans won't be able to blame Dole's loss on the Libertarian vote.

Dole lost because of her own incompetence as a senator and a candidate.

Though I agree that DCCC rocking chairs ad was one of the best.

Weather could plauy a factor in NC
Early voting appears to have built up a big lead for Democrats with their dominating turnout so far.  Election Day itself is looking like it will be rainy.  Now the quetion is 'whose supporters are motivated enough to stand in line in the rain tomorrow?'.

The ads that made a real difference
in this race were:
- the rocking chair guys were a big plus for Hagan, getting the point across while killing Dole with kindness.
- the Godless ads are just appalling. I can't believe Dole went there.

Ha, ha. Fuck you, Liz.
I look forward to seeing her become unemployed come January.
