CO-04: Eidsness Switches to Dems, Moves to Run Against Musgrave (R)

You may remember these results from election night '06:

4th District, Colorado

Marilyn Musgrave (R): 46%
Angie Paccione (D): 43%
Eric Eidsness (Reform): 11%

Eric Eidsness is a former Naval officer and Reagan appointee to the EPA.  His Wikipedia bio also lists his affiliation with Republicans For Kerry in 2004.  Despite competing for attention in a marquee race, Eidsness managed to pick up a bit of traction, gaining the endorsements of several local newspapers and cracking the double digits on election day.

Without wasting any time, Eidsness is back in the ring, and this time, he's wearing Democratic stripes:

Eric Eidsness [...] announced today that he's switching his party affiliation to Democrat.

The announcement is likely a prelude to another congressional run for Eidsness, a long-time Republican who was a top Environmental Protection Agency administrator in the Reagan administration.

"I am a new Democrat who can bring business savvy and fiscal restraint to the Democratic Party's proposals should I run for Congress in 2008 and win," Eidsness said in a prepared statement.

I'm not sure how he'd manage in a primary field, but this an interesting development.  As far as third-party types go, it's clear that Eidsness has a bit of game in him.  Will Colorado Democrats be comfortable--or willing--to hand the torch over to him?

(Hat-tip to Luis and Square State.)

Sweet.
Maybe I won't discredit this race after all. When we came up with our lists of where to compete I wrote off CO-04, however this guy may be about right. I remember watching the CO-04 debate before the election and thinking to myself that this guy seemed much more on the ball than the others. Paccione never impressed me, she screamed east coast lbieral to me which for the West just is not acceptable.

Granted, he'll need to clean up his act a bit with some polish, but when it comes down to the issues, considering how red the district is, I like him.

Welcome aboard!

26, Male, Democrat, TX-26

If Angie runs, Eidsness can't win the primary
First, Angie was an excellent candidate -- if you saw her on the campaign trail you would see how natural she is there.  And she is beloved by the Dems in the district, so it would be no problem for her to win again.  Plus, in a Dem primary, Eidsness is viewed much like Nader was in 2000 -- costing the Democratic candidate the election.  Much of the reason that Eidsness got 11% was that the campaign was so negative on both sides, so Eidsness was viewed as a protest candidate against the tenor of the campaign as a whole.

If Angie does not run, however, he may be a good candidate to take on Musgrave as he has the conservative bona fides but is also a good civil libertarian.  However, Angie would be a much more reliably progressive vote in Congress so if she could win, then that should be a factor.

I love when
well supported 3rd party candidates turn to our side.

Good stuff - it shows that he can get support outside the regular power structure and that is nice to see.

I hope that Angie runs again
I emailed her last month asking if she was going to run again and she said that she was undecided but would most likely make the decision sometime around May.  If she does run again I'll be dropping some bucks into her campaign.
