NC-11: Mumpower Suspends Campaign

A wise man once said: "You can't stop the Mumpower! You can only hope to contain it."

Consider him contained:

Republican Congressional candidate Carl Mumpower has suspended his campaign to unseat incumbent Heath Shuler, saying he'll eliminate about 80 percent of formal campaigning until at least half of the Republican leaders in the 15 counties in the 11th Congressional District commit to core party principles.

"I'm not going to be doing any fundraising or advertising-there won't be any active campaigning for the Republican Party," Mumpower said this morning. "I'll put things on hold until I get party officials to commit to the principles and to the process of holding elected officials accountable."

Needless to say, the NRCC, who once spoke glowingly about Mumpower, is now incredibly embarrassed to have handed over this district to him.

SSP rates this race as "Safe Democratic".

Safe "Democratic"?
Let's be honest and call it "Safe Blue Dog" or, better yet, "Safe Republican Lite"

RE: Safe "Democratic"?
LOL, agreed, Larry McD

Hey now, Shuler is the best we can hope for
Shuler is the type of Dem who can hold that district with ease for two decades plus if he sticks around.  I'll take him anyday over another Taylor or nuttier type republican.

Shuler calls it like he sees it
After 10 years of Charles Taylor, Shuler is like a breath of fresh air.  We need more of this in DC:

N.C. Dem says many play politics instead of doing best for country

"I was hoping that the two political parties would work together for America instead of (emphasizing) political differences," he said. "But, in fact, what I keep seeing is this continuation of working for the political parties first and (for) power here in Washington.

"We need to do what's right for America first."

"Whether it's in the committees or on the House floor, I see a lack of maturity, quite frankly, in this house of Congress, where members are actually fighting against one another for their own political posturing or political game of power," he said.

In what appeared to be a rebuttal to Chabot, Shuler said oil and gas companies already hold leases on nearly 68 million acres of federal land that could produce an additional 4.8 million barrels of oil and 44.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas each day. That would nearly double total U.S. oil production and would increase natural gas production by 75 percent, he said.

"But yet we stand on the House floor, and people kind of think they're Hollywood stars because of C-SPAN, and we talk about (drilling in Alaska) and talk about it when we haven't even united together as a body, the people's House, and said what can we do to better our country," Shuler said.

Shuler said he also had been upset earlier in the week when he went to the House floor to speak about a resolution that he sponsored to recognize March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day.

Shuler's two young children were in Washington and were going to watch him discuss the legislation. But Republicans kept using the time to talk about the country's fuel crisis, he said.

"Here my kids were unable to see me go on the floor and talk about our veterans and the importance of establishing a Vietnam Veterans Day to show them the honor that they so well deserve," Shuler said.

"It's kind of embarrassing," he said.

Exactly
Shuler isn't with us on social issues, but he's pretty progressive on economics and a huge in[rovement over Charles Taylor or any other republican who would otherwise hold NC-11.  He's actually turned out to be a better democrat than I expected.

Awww -- his $906.20 CoH ...
... might have been enough to run his website until election day.

Judging by his website
Five bucks would be enough to run his website until election day.

Good for him....
..for standing up to to Republican leaders.  I think every Republican candidate should follow his example and suspend their campaigns until the Republican Party leadership commits itself to "core party principles."  This is a long process and it's completely possible that this candidate "strike" may have to extend itself to the next campaign.  But who said their noble cause would be easy or painless?
