Netroots Swearing-In Party

by: James L.

Tue Jan 02, 2007 at 1:33 PM EST

A few weeks ago, we discussed a few of the swearing-in parties for the 110th Congress in Washington, DC on Jan. 4th.  If you're going to be in the area, add another one to your list: the first Netroots Swearing-In Party!  Here's the lowdown:

WHAT:
  Netroots Swearing-In Party

WHERE:
MCCXXIII, 1223 Connecticut Ave NW, DC
Dupont Circle metro stop, south exit
  http://www.1223dc.co...

WHEN:
  Thursday, January 4
  9PM 'til Midnight
Champagne toast at 10PM (Courtesy of the New Organizing Institute)

The host committee will include Moveon.org's Tom Matzzie, Roz Lemieux of the New Organizing Institute, Chris Bowers and Matt Stoller of MyDD, Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC), Harry Reid aide Ari Rabin-Havt, and the Swing State Project's very own DavidNYC.

If you can make it out, stop by and join in on some good conversations and plenty of champagne!

UPDATE (David): If you're looking for other events to attend, check out this handy PDF I've compiled. Just one warning: Some of these events may be very private/very exclusive/require donations/require RSVPs, etc. So if you aren't sure, please call the campaign or organization in question.

I'll be there
I'll head over after Drinking Liberally, which is only a few blocks away.

If anyone wants to come by DCDL beforehand, we'll be in the back room at Timberlake's, 1726 Connecticut Ave (a couple of blocks north of the Dupont Circle Metro) starting at 6:30.

Also, a warning for those going to MCCXXIII: they can be strict about their dress code.  Their site isn't very usable, but I did find it described elsewhere as "No Athletic wear, no rugged wear, no boots, no timberlands, no hats, no sneakers, no shorts, no flip-flops, and no baggy jeans." Presumably it'll be no problem for people who've been to congressional open houses earlier.

a question of timing
i can't seem to find a tv schedule of the swearing in of the speaker - does anyone know what time things are going down?

swearing in @ noon
Should be on C-SPAN most of the morning

swearing in ceremonies
Guests were invited for 10:30.  They are going to spend a while taking attendance, etc. before the actual swearing in.  I think they've scheduled other stuff for 1:00 pm, so I would guess that the speaker will take the oath of office at 11:30 or so, with the rest of the members being sworn in after that.

No, the members are sworn in first.
The guests are told to be there at 10:30 so you can be settled in your seats when things get under way on the floor. Bring something to read.

The Congress will begin at noon with taking attendance based upon the certificates of elections filed by the states. We will answer "present" when our names are called. I'm not sure what will happen with the disputed Florida seat. I think maybe Rush Holt or somebody is going to make parliamentary inquiry whether an initial decision to seat a member may be revisited later, after legal challenges to the election have run their course. That will take a little while.

Then there will be nominating speeches for Speaker. Then there will be a rollcall voice vote. Then the newly elected Speaker, presumably Nancy Pelosi, will receive the gavel from Dennis Hastert. Then Pelosi will speak.

Somewhere in there will be adoption of rules. I can't recall if that is before or after we elect the Speaker. Some Republican may attempt to amend the proposed Rules or otherwise make sanctimonious, hypocritical noises about procedural fairness on nationwide television, reminding us all how glad we are that they're now in the minority.

There may be some other miscellaneous matters. It should all take two to three hours. You should put your reading materials away when we get started, and resist the temptation to start reading again during the proceedings.

It is done! Welcome Speaker Pelosi!
And Hooray to the 233 Democrats who all voted for her!
Kudos to Rush Holt-D NJ 12 for standing up for Christine Jennings-D FL-13 and JEERS to Cong. "Opey" Putnam-R FL 12 for his smarmy ASSist to Vernon B.

I am stunned
that you have included John Hall's Party. Did you stop by? I would have loved to meet you.

Stunned? Why?
I included information about every event I could get my hands on.

In the end, I don't think we stopped by John Hall's event, unfortunately. So many events, so little time!
