MI-07, MI-09: Schauer, Peters Receive Strong Financial Support for First Quarter

The end of the first quarter brings news that bodes well for Democrats in Michigan.  Congressional challengers Mark Schauer (MI-07) and Gary Peters (MI-09), both considered top contenders on the Red-To-Blue list, have ended the quarter with impressive fundraising totals.

Peters' campaign reports that it raised over $346,000 for the first quarter, reaching roughly $748,000 total for the cycle.  Furthermore, in sharp contrast to the GOP's reliance on large-scale wealthy donors and multinational corporations, 90% of Peters' donations came from within the Wolverine State, and 94% came from individuals.  Nearly 2,000 individual contributors signed on by the end of the quarter, reinforcing the growing power of small donations from individuals via the Internet, a trend that will undoubtedly shape elections going forward.

Schauer's numbers reflect a similar trend, as his campaign announced that it has raised more than $326,000 in the quarter, and more than $900,000 total to date.  86% of that total came from in-state donors, and, during this quarter, the campaign saw 1,000 new individuals contribute.

Always encouraging to hear news like this, especially from districts in a crucial swing state!

Good
Blogs didn't push these two candidates at all this cycle, and they still came out swinging, and strong.  Good deal for us.

The Push Begins Here!
If I have anything to say about it, this blog will be touting Mark Schauer and Gary Peters all the way to election day!

Well, what I meant was...
Oct.-Dec. 2007 there were a lot of diaries tracking the campaign asking for donations at the end of it.  (Moreso Gary Peters than Mark Schauer, but there was mostly one or two people doing it) Haven't seen many of those this past quarter, and they still had a good one.

Buy yeah, no doubt we'll cover 'em if they need a hand.

We're here now (MI-09 represent!)...
From here to November, Gary Peters will have multiple bloggers in his corner, building support in the netroots and enhancing his Web presence.

Making the DCCC's Red to Blue list was just a first step in the online push to unseat Joe Knollenberg.

IA-03; Ed Fallon Raises $172,000
Via the Des Moines Register.
The progressive democrat, Ed Fallon, challenging incumbent Bush Dog Leonard Boswell has raised more than I expected. This is good news. I can't wait to see some polling soon.

A Democratic challenger in central Iowa filed a campaign finance report today showing he has raised $171,618 in his bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell, a Des Moines Democrat.

Ed Fallon, a Des Moines Democrat and former state legislator, said in Federal Election Commission documents that all of the contributions, collected between Jan. 1 and March 31, came from individuals.

The old Boz still has about $700,000 CoH as of 12/31/07, and sadly, almost 3/4 of it is from PACs/lobbyists.

Fallon has been highly critical of Boswell for collecting 74 percent of his campaign money from political action committees last year, while Boswell and his supporters have pointed out that Fallon benefits from organizations such as Democracy for America that direct contributions to campaigns via the Internet.

I'm ready for some better democrats in this country, and a better democrat in IA-03. Let's get started!

It would be nice to see some polling
to rally the blogosphere to try and pick off Boswell this cycle, so we can focus on others next cycle.

That's Great!
But how did he already spend 90% of it?

Well, boswell has been characterizing him
as the nutjob leftie.  He probably did it trying to protect his name from smears.

MI-07 Walberg's numbers are out
Timmy just put his numbers out. Despite the fact that Club for Growth has been raising money for him and Darth Cheney did a fundraiser for him this quarter he was outraised by Schauer for the 3rd straight quarter.

Raised - $265K
COH - $604K

Schauer now has a $150K COH advantage!

Ouch
That would be such a huge change in representation.

Why is he raising so little?
That is lame lame lame.  Our freshmen are doing way better than that, for the most part.

A guy like Walberg should have no problem raising money.  The GOP has rich friends.  He's an ultra-conservative in good standing.  I can't figure out why the money would be drying up, unless the GOP's rich friends are really really really dumb.  If they sit out this cycle (NRCC, NRSC, congressional incumbents) and get blown out, they're going to have to spend quadruple over the next three cycles to climb out of the hole they'll be in.  Beating new Dem incumbents is a hell of a lot harder and more expensive than protecting old GOP incumbents.  Just witness how many of our freshmen aren't even being challenged this cycle (Ron Klein, Joe Donnelly, Brad Ellsworth, Joe Courtney, Zach Space, Ed Perlmutter, Heath Schuler, Joe Sestak, John Hall, Mike Arcuri...)

I really have been wondering why the NRSC and NRCC have no friends.  The Senate picture is even worse.  If the GOP donors let the GOP Senate Caucus lose 8 seats, when and how are they going to get those back?  How much are they gonna have to pay to do it?  Why would they let a loser like Ensign run the NRSC, and why would they let it go broke?  It's insanity.

Why don't they have any friends?
Do bullies form strong friendships?

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01
