Mayor Richard Daley announced today that he's running for his sixth term in 2007. It is my opinion that, assuming he wins reelection, he will step aside in 2009 to take over running the Chicago Olympic Organizing Committee, if Chicago is awarded the 2016 games.

Ya think Bill Daley would run in that case?
Bill Daley is Richard Daley's younger brother. He was Commerce Secretary in Clinton's 2nd term, chairman of Al Gore's 2000 campaign, and currently is the Midwest Chairman of JPMorganChase.

Maybe
But Richie's son should be back from duty in Iraq by then, barring the worst, of course. He'll need a few years seasoning in the State's Attorney's office, like dear old dad, but he should be ready for a run for the 7th floor by 2015 or thereabout.  Bill might make a decent caretaker until then, unless President Clinton or Obama need him for a Cabinet post.

I doubt he'll ever step down or lose
I mean, they call him "mayor for life" for a reason.  I don't see why he'd step down for that committee, when he could just appoint one of his bagillion cronies to do it.

As far as ever having a serious challenge, I think we'll see a Kennedy lose in Cambridge before we see a Daley lose in Chicago (although I would LOVE to see the latter--can you think of a more corrupt political machine?)

Again
Oh, come on...it's not about the man it's about the Machine.  And the Regular Democratic Organization is as healthy as ever. When 49 of 50 aldermen self identify as Democrats, when the Democratic Primary for all city offices IS the de facto General Election, when the Republicans literally put up a clown (Ray Wardingley, 1995) as their candidate for mayor, Chicago is a one-party town.  Luckily, Mayor Daley governs like a New Democrat (fiscally conservative, socially liberal) so there is less to worry about than it appears.  Just as Italians said about Mussolini, "He made the trains run on time," Chicagoans can (and do) say, "He keeps the snow plows and salt trucks running."
