KY-02: Lewis Quits Congress

by: James L.

Expect more of these surprises in the weeks and months ahead:

In perhaps the biggest surprise of the day Republican U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis of Cecelia will not seek re-election, declining to run for another term in the 2nd district.

Daniel London, Lewis's chief of staff, filed minutes before the filing deadline, with his wife dropping off the papers.

State Sen. Brett Guthrie of Bowling Green, having heard of the possibility of Lewis getting out, also filed for the Republican primary.

It all came down with just moments to spare before the 4 p.m. filing deadline. And it came on the heals of Democrat Reid Haire, the Daviess County judge executive, filing to give fellow Democrat David Boswell of Owensboro, a competitive primary on May 20.

Gonggg.

If that asshole prevented us from getting a strong candidate in the race,
by waiting until the day of the filing deadline, I'm gonna be PISSED.

This is an extremely annoying practice.  Rodney Alexander pulled it in LA last cycle.

I'd support a system where the filing deadline for incumbents was a week before the filing deadline for challengers, just to prevent this kind of crap.

It's worse
Lewis filed for re-election all the way back in November and then withdrew at the last minute.

As expected, Anne Northrup filed this afternoon to reclaim her aseat from John Yarmuth.  The Louisville Courier Journal quoted Northrup as saying she had just thrown out thousands of Northrup for Congress bumper stickers.  Her arm was twisted by the Mitch McConnell faction within the state GOP.  At least one of her primary opponents, ex-U. Of Louisville and NFL player and developer Chris Thieneman says he'll spend hundreds of thousands of his own money and predicted a nasty race.  At least that's good.

And yes, we have no candidate in KY-5.  Ken Stepp joined the cattle herd lining up to oppose Mitch McConnell for the Senate.

If we're going to fail to file in a KY CD,
... then KY-05 is the one to fail to file in.  Hal Rogers (R) owns that seat until he's ready to retire.  Mind you, isn't he getting on up there in age?

However, I'd still prefer to file everywhere, cause there's always a seat or two with an unexpected event (medical issue, unexpected scandal, etc.).

Actually
I think David Boswell is running in KY-02. He did hold statewide office in the 1980s and is a state senator, IIRC.

Although Boswell has some oddities when it comes to conduct in his history.

One more thing
Republicans probably get robbed harder here than Dems.

after all, they almost had an uncontested primary with an untested candidate.

Interesting district
Bush won 65-34 in 2004, but Lewis only won 55-45 in 2006, and there are 269,000 registered Democrats vs. 164,000 Republicans

2004 House
Lewis ran ahead of Bush in 2004, getting 67.9% to W's 65.0%.  Maybe the state is getting bluer.  The GOper are split between a McConnell and a Fletcher faction (at least they were), and Democrats gained a House seat in 2004 (Chandler) and 2006 (Yarmuth) and the Governorship and Lt. Gov. (2007).

It was a targeted district in '06
They ran a conservative state representative, Mike Weaver, against him. He got outspent 2-1, although I don't know if the DCCC put it any money.

[ Parent ]
I could be wrong...
... but didn't Weaver turn out to be a better candidate on paper than in real life?  He didn't strike me as the brightest bulb on the tree in '06...

[ Parent ]
Ron Weaver...
...actually did better than Ken Lucas, the KY-02 Democrat whom the DCCC heavily pushed and spent heavily for.

Obligatory and overused as of late:

It celebrates another Republican retirement...
...therefore, it can't be overused.

It hasn't been posted in the Hulshof
Front page yet, and we have yet to front page Tom Davis expected retirement for Friday.

[ Parent ]
We never tire of it
It's a top 40 hit!

Keep it in heavy rotation for a few more months, until we get to 40 retirements!

Next year we'll go for 40 indictments.

This diary on congressional filing deadlines may come in handy
for anticipating this type of thing:

http://swingstateproject.com/s...

though it doesn't look like for a couple of weeks when PA and NM file.

NM holds no surprises as everyone's running for the Senate there, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some endangered PA Repubs. bail, maybe Gerlach or Murphy?

Retirements, etc.
Maybe English will retire (PA-3).  He does not look to be in the best of shape from the picture on his House web site.  Peterson, of course, already announced his retirement in PA-5.

Btw, neither of the 2 West Virginia Dems had an opponent per the WV Secretary of State site as of earlier in the afternoon.  Their due date was Saturday but I think some Republican was filing by mail?  Wait a few days for the dust to settle there.

PVI
What's the PVI of KY-02?

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

R+12.9
But Democrats enjoy a large registration advantage.  A conservative Democrat could make a real race of this.
