NM-Sen, NM-03: Udall Will Run for Senate, Local Sources Say

Ladies and gentlemen, we now have a progressive candidate in the New Mexico Senate race that we can be proud of.  From Heath Haussamen:

U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., has decided that he will run for the Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici next year.

Udall has called a number of Democratic Party insiders this week, including at least some county party chairs, to inform them of his decision, reliable sources confirmed. A Udall spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

The early polls show Udall dominating his potential GOP foes: fellow Reps. Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce.  It looks like we will not only have a solid progressive in the race, but we’ll have the most “electable” candidate of either party’s current field, as well.

This is a huge coup for the folks over at Draft Udall.  Give it up, folks!

  1. Wow, what great news! We’re going to get several real progressives elected in the Senate next year and it’s also looking great for the possible Democratic gain in the Senate.

  2. Losing such a terrific pickup opportunity would have had us kicking ourselves for countless years to come. Tom Udall has helped us dodge a huge bullet.

I’ve gotta say, I’m feeling very good about NM, CO, NH, VA, MN, and KY (given Crit). If we get Begich in AK and a retirement in MS, I feel good about those too. A strong race in OR, and bam! 60 seats (with Lieberman, of course).

  3. This is the best news I’ve heard all week, not only are we picking up another seat, we are doing it with a solid liberal vote!

    One more time, YES!!!

  4. Another positive aspect is that we have several shots at picking up some NM House seats as well.  Now if we could only find some top-tier candidates for NC and KY we would be in good shape.
