NJ-03: Saxton to Announce Retirment

by: Trent Thompson

New Jersey political insiders say Rep. Jim Saxton (R-NJ) will announce his retirement as early as this afternoon. With a PVI of D+3, this district should be a top Democratic pick-up opportunity for 2008.

State Sen. John Adler (D-Cherry Hill) has been running a strong challenge to Saxton and should be a formidable candidate for the open seat.

UPDATE (David): It's official

Wow
I hadn't heard anything about this one.  Was this one on the watch list?

Follow the elections in Georgia at the 2010 Georgia Race Tracker.

WOW!
the moderate Rs are all jumping ship before 2008, neat.

Also, I saw on the 2008racetracker, someone has edited TX-06 to say that Joe Barton is unlikely to seek re-election. Anyone know anything else about this one?

Throw in another one
Roll Cal is reporting that Cubin (R-WY) is to announce her retirement tomorrow as well.

Trauner would have had a better chance against her than an open seat. Either way, here's to better representation for the people of Wyoming, it's a win for them either way.

You underestimate Wyoming Republicans
I think they're very capable of finding someone else just as bad. Maybe worse!

[ Parent ]
Barton was in big trouble
His district has been changing and a very tough opponent was lining up support. If he leaves it will be to avoid losing.

[ Parent ]
Barton challenger...
I didn't know of a potentially strong Barton opponent, exciting.

For those who didn't make the connection
The 3Q fundraising reports show Saxton with no or no significant primary challengers (AKA no Republicans gearing up to replace him).  He had over 1.3 million cash on hand.

Our guy has 229K on Hand.  Lets hope he keeps that edge on whoever his opponent is.

Adler needs to build recognition in Ocean County
He needs to get voters in Ocean County to know who he is and what he stands for. Ocean County is the most conservative part of the district, and he's from Cherry Hill, the most liberal part of the district.
