SSP Daily Digest: 3/3

VA-Gov: PPP's latest has McAulliffe 21, Moran 19 and Deeds 14 for the Dem gubernatorial primary. Last month it was 18-18-11. The election is three months off. (D)

PA-Sen: An opening for Pat Toomey? Susquehanna has a new poll showing Snarlin' Arlen's re-elects at just 38% - and an awful 26% among Republicans. (D)

TX-Gov: Tom Schieffer, a former State Rep. and Bush Ambassador to Australia, has announced that he's forming an exploratory committee to seek the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Texas. When questioned by reporters, Schieffer says that he does not regret voting for Bush for Governor and President. A recent PPP poll has Kay Bailey Hutchison crushing Schieffer by a 54-30 margin, while incumbent Gov. Rick Perry leads Schieffer by only 45-35. (J)

IN-Gov: Is Baron Hill getting ready for a 2012 gubernatorial campaign? There was some brief speculation that he might run in 2008, but of course that never panned out. (J)

OR-Gov: This may be a tea leaf that Gordon Smith is passing on the 2010 governor's race, or it may simply be a way to stay in the Beltway money loop for a year while laying groundwork, but Gordo is staying in DC and taking a "senior adviser" position (since he's subject to the two-year lobbying ban) with prominent DC law/lobbying/soul-devouring firm Covington & Burling.

Just curious ...
I like these daily digests, but what do the (D) and (J) mean?  Thanks!

hmm
TX-gov: there's a provision that prevents primary losers from running in the gen as an ind.  might perry, if it looks like he'll lose, pull out of the primary to run as an ind?
IN-gov:  would rather see hill run for sen if lugar retires.  then have sodrel run against him as the repub nom.  seriously, hill needs a restraining order.

being normal is for the mediocre.

I dunno about Hill statewide
As much as I like him I'd rather we have more of a slam-dunk run for Lugar's seat if he retires.  That person being Brad Ellsworth.

IL-05 Election today. A bit surprising
how little coverage the special primary election to replace Emanuel has gotten in blogs (as opposed to past recent special elections). I guess it's because there's no real chance of this district flipping parties.
And from what I have read there is a good shot that whoever wins will likely be to the left of Emanuel (to varying degrees).

A nice quickie overview of the twelve Dem candidates with their photos:

IN-Gov: I hope not
He should focus on keeping his seat and stay there.

I'm hoping for Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel. He's popular in a swingish region of the state, young (43) and previously worked in Congress and as a state legislator.

He would be fantastic
As you said, he's young, represents a battleground area, is attractive and articulate -- and by Indiana standards pretty progressive.  He actually ran for Congress when he was like 30 years old (narrowly losing to Jon Hostettler in the Ho's first re-election after the '94 landslide), and has become a better politician since then.  By all accounts he's been a successful and popular mayor who has the ambition (and now the record of accomplishment) to move up.

Yeah
2008 would have been a bit to early. By 2012 he'll have two terms behind him, won't have to run against Daniels and will have more accomplishment's to tout.

SC-Gov / SC-03
Rep. Gresham Barrett (SC-03) (R+14) is running for governor in 2010.  Another open seat.  One less Republican to donate to the NRCC.  I <3 Retiremets.  http://thehill.com/leading-the...

He can't donate if he's not running for re-election?
Even if he still holds the seat?

The only thing I can see is that the NRCC will have to spend dough to defend this seat.

Lets check - $712,855 left over in his bank account as of
Mid February.  Are there laws prohibiting him from transfering that to his governor's race?  If so, then I guess he will probably give that to the NRCC.

[ Parent ]
Politico says he can transfer it.
No boost for the NRCC

[ Parent ]
My Assumption
My assumption on any transfer rules is that federal officeholders can always transfer funds.  They wrote the legislation, thus, they are the least restricted in what they can do.  OTOH, there seem to be plenty of restrictions on transferring money into Congressional races.

Sadly Fiorina, expected Boxer challenger, has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

I had a teacher in HS who went through chemotherapy treatments... Nobody could run a challenger-campaign like that.  It's a ginormous drain on an individual and his or her family.  Best wishes.

This after Mike Johanns's lung cancer as someone else mentioned(?)
I blame it on Jim Bunning.

Actually, I read that what the surgery was for, turned out not to be cancer.

Good deal.
