NY-Sen-B: Kennedy Pasting King in Rasmu Poll

by: DavidNYC

Sat Jan 10, 2009 at 1:58 PM EST

Rasmussen (1/6, likely voters, no trendlines):

Caroline Kennedy (D): 51
Peter King (R): 33
Other: 9
Undecided: 7
(MoE: ±4.5%)

A rather different picture from PPP's poll earlier in the week, though it's a bit hard to compare directly since Rasmussen for whatever reason did not also ask about Cuomo. (They also failed to test DavidNYC vs. King.) I am a little mystified about Rasmu's choice to use a likely voter screen some two years before any election - how can they possibly judge that?

Anyhow, we should finally have our answer as to who the next junior senator from New York will be in a couple of weeks. Can't happen soon enough.

Any Dem will beat any Rep statewide in New York
With that said, I would like Patterson to appoint someone who already has a record of legislative accomplishment.

If any Dem could manage to lose statewide in NY, it would be CK
IMO based on: 1. her recent truly dismal public appearances, plus 2. a rookie candidate always makes rookie mistakes, and the NY media (much of it RW controlled) will be ready, willing and eager to pounce...

If for whatever reason Gov Paterson picks Kennedy, I hope she'll set hubris aside and be willing to undergo a lot of candidate preparation the next two years (as well as performing well in her Senate job of course)

The Caroline Craze Will Soon Be Over
Some have compared her to Sarah Palin. While I find that comparison insulting, it is however truth in the context of the interviews Kennedy gave over the last few weeks. She sounded less convincing than Palin.

Consider that Palin had the support of millions of redneck voters of average intelligence and managed to get (alongside McCain) 46% of the vote last November; Kennedy has only one voter to convince, David Paterson (the highly educated Governor of New York).

Caroline Kennedy,
soon to be Caroline Kennedy Townsend, will have a tough fight against Peter King. She may win at the end. NY is more Dem than MD.

I do not understand why we are not selecting candidates who would win these seats easily and retain them in future.

to replace the Senate seat currently held by
Hillary Rodham.

Bill Posey is not half-alligator...and is outclassed by Davy Crockett anyway: http://www.washingtonmonthly.c...

NY may not be more Dem than MD
but Senate races are more Dem than Governor races

[ Parent ]
i meant more partisan
more likely to favor a weaker candidate in the dominant political party

[ Parent ]
Like who?
Any Democrat will have a tough fight against Peter King.

Hahahahahahaha
Oh wait, you're serious...

Is he?
Sounded like a snark to me.  king is a joke statewide.

I have been known to have a broken sarcasm detector before

[ Parent ]
Caroline Kennedy Townsend?
What are you talking about?

[ Parent ]
Sorta snark
Kathleen Kennedy Townsend lost the Maryland Governors race in 2002 after running a terrible campaign. Similar situation to a point but New York is more Democratic than Maryland and a federal race is much more likely to fit state partisan leanings.

[ Parent ]
Hey
Maryland hasn't elected a Republican Senator since 1980. That's not something New York can claim.

[ Parent ]
Nothing wrong with Maryland
Nothing wrong with New York in 2009 either. Which is why they won't elect a Republican next year whoever each party nominates.

[ Parent ]
Well
New York hasn't elected a non-incumbent Republican Senator since 1980.

This Peter King fetish is getting ridiculous
Reminds me alot of people like Brad Carson, Inez Tennenbaum, Michael Steele, Tom Kean, Ronnie Musgrove - seemingly attractive candidates who still got blown away by average opponents in states favoring the other party.

I agree
I don't see King breaking 45%, especially with Schumer (Former DSCC chair) running in the same year.

[ Parent ]
They just asked, "Other"
They don't have a long list of potential Democrats and Republicans that they list outside of these two.
