AZ-Sen: Napolitano Not Selected for AG?

by: James L.

Tue Nov 18, 2008 at 4:11 PM EST

First Read has the unconfirmed news that Barack Obama has selected Eric Holder, the former deputy Attorney General under Janet Reno, to take the big job:

President-elect Obama has offered Eric Holder the position of attorney general, and Holder has accepted it, according to sources involved in the process. The formal announcement has been held up while Obama transition team members ran the idea past key senators. And Obama wanted to announce members of his financial team first -- Treasury Secretary and so on.

Holder is a former superior court judge and U.S. attorney in Washington and a former prosecutor in the Public Integrity section of the Justice Department. He was Deputy Attorney General under Janet Reno, during which he was well regarded. At one point, he strongly considered running for mayor of Washington, D.C., but decided being the No. 2 official at Justice was too good to pass up.

An oft-mentioned possibility for AG up until now was Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, whom many Dems consider a dream candidate to run for John McCain's (possibly open) Senate seat in 2010. It's still possible that she could be placed elsewhere in Obama's cabinet, but for now, she still appears to be available.

Good news
Also this free's up former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer to run for Governor in 2010.

Run Janet, Run!

Holder will certainly have the most interesting confirmation hearing if this is true.
He helped shepherd through the Marc Rich pardon. Jeff Sessions is going to have some fun with this one, kids.

Sessions AKA Deputy Dawg
There'll be some right wing noise but ultimately their case is pretty thin. Their buddy Scooter Libby was Rich's attorney in the matter. Holder will easily get the votes he needs.

Hahahaha
I momentarily mispronounced that as "Scooby Litter".

Bill Posey is not half-alligator...and is outclassed by Davy Crockett anyway: http://www.washingtonmonthly.c...

MSNBC (David Shuster) is saying he's a more non-controversial pick
By the Obama campaign team.  While I'm sure he may pick a bone with him, it will be easy to pass him.  Especially with 58 Democratic Senators.

kind of an uninspiring
one though when their are so many good national figures who could take this position. Especially Attorney General Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.

Call no man happy until he is dead-Aeschylus

[ Parent ]
Blumenthal has other designs
From what I've heard, Blumenthal's had his eyes on a Senate seat for a while, so he might run against Joementia in '12, or if Dodd does retire, in '10. Agree that he'd make a good US AG.

[ Parent ]
Huh?
Blumenthal is a national figure, since when is the Connecticut Attorney General a national figure? Holder actually is a national figure being the Deputy AG during the secong term of the Clinton administration and was briefly the acting AG until John Ashcroft was confirmed.

[ Parent ]
Wrong
He had to consider a lot of requests. He gave Rich's "neutral, leaning towards favorable." and Clinton cited that as one of the factors in his pardon. He most certainly did not "shepherd" it through.

I'm speculating she gets Homeland Security
And Sebelius could get Energy, which would take away two of our best 2010 Senate recruits. But given the Lieberman fiasco, I'm having a hard time sympathizing with the DSCC today.

I really don't think
Obama will be taking Sebelius or Napolitano (depending on whether they have any desire to run in 2010).

[ Parent ]
why she Sebelius
get Sec of Energy? Just to put her in the cabinet? Come on. She was Insurance Commissioner, then governor of a state that produces almost no energy of its own, or oil for that matter. And Napititano is nowhere near the most qualified person to be head of Homeland Security, or for that matter the one we need.

Call no man happy until he is dead-Aeschylus

Wind Energy
That's what Kansas produces, thanks to Sebelius. SHe's an alternative energy booster.

[ Parent ]
no, not Homeland Security
I've been telling Republican acquaintances that I expect that seat to go to Bill Ayers.
One of them had to sit down and breathe slowly with his head between his knees.

So ok. I admit it. I do have a mean streak.

Janet Now Has No Excuse
To go after that succulent Senate seat in 2 years.

Run, Janet, Run!

Yep
I'm happy she didn't get picked. John McCain's seat is hers for the taking if she wants it and i'm hoping she does.

It would have been stupid to pick her for AG. Holder is a solid good pick.

No one outside of political junkies knows who the hell Mark Rich is, and that's the only knock i have ever heard against him.

Would give Republicans the Governorship
There is no Lt. Gov. in Arizona.  The president of the state senate, a Republican, would take over and have a head start for the '10 election.  Let Napolitano stay where she is.

Actually
Jan Brewer, the Secretary of State, would ascend to the Governorship.

[ Parent ]
Is Jan a Democrat or Republican?
Also, sidenote, is Jan a man or woman?  (I have friends of both genders with that name.)

A female Republican
very partisan.

[ Parent ]
Stand corrected
But the point's the same.
