CA-04: Don't Look Now...

by: James L.

Fri Nov 14, 2008 at 5:22 PM EST

...but Charlie Brown has cut Tom McClintock's lead from 1,248 to 533 votes:

Tom McClintock (R): 168,868
Charlie Brown (D): 168,335

CQ has more on this crapshoot:

McClintock's campaign on Thursday estimated that 35,000 absentee and provisional ballots remained to be counted, and neither campaign expects the count to be completed this week. McClintock and Brown are both scheduled to attend freshman orientation next week in Washington, D.C.

The rules for vote reporting in California make it virtually impossible to get an exact reading on the number of votes still outstanding. All or portions of nine counties make up the 4th District in the state's northeastern corner, and counties are not required to provide updates to California's secretary of state regarding their progress in the canvass. Those counties that do report such numbers, but are divided between congressional districts, generally do not break down the number of still-uncounted ballots by district.

The McClintock campaign says that this latest batch of votes came from Nevada County, which went big for Brown on election day. They're confidently projecting a victory for the carpetbagging blockhead, but I guess we'll see. There are a lot of votes left on the table, and not much we know about where they're coming from.

Sounds like most of it is in red counties
From some local CA commenters over on DKos...  Not impossible but unlikely....

For Pete's sake
CA-04... CA-44... OH-15... VA-12... AK-SEN... MN-SEN... I'm not sure how much longer I can take all this uncertainty.

What's more, search it out as I might, there is NO NEW NEWS ON ANY OF THEM.

The next time I see a thread on any of these races, I want it to announce the certification of a winner... or at least a flippin' AP call.

I swear, this feels like a third world country sometimes.

IS IT TOO MUCH TROUBLE JUST TO COUNT THE STUPID VOTES ALREADY SO WE DOWN-BALLOT GEEKS CAN FINALLY GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP!?

these crazy races
I agree it's unbearable... There won't be any news from Minnesota and VA-05 for a while, however, since all ballots have been counted and we're waiting for recount to start... that won't happen until DECEMBER in Virginia. In Ohio we shouldn't expect to see much updates before Thanksgiving.

[ Parent ]
Even though from what I read it seems unlikely...
...we'll pull ahead.  Missouri has yet to be called for president.

[ Parent ]
What's up with MO anyway?
What are we waiting for for that state?

And if it goes McCain, MO should CLEARLY no longer be considered the bellweather state for the country.  I mean, if it's supposed to be the bellweather, it sure as shit shouldve gone Obama.

MO is simply becoming too conservative and too Southern, regardless of recent Dem wins (Nixon, McCaskill, Carnahan in 2010 etc).  That obviously is more of a local Dem trending but at the presidential level, MO is simply not a bellweather anymore.

Actually
it's getting pretty close to "over" in Alaska.
http://www.elections.alaska.go...

[ Parent ]
Nevada
The SOS page confirms that today's update that caused such a big tightening is from Nevada. This still has a long way to go!

VA-5
There is no VA-12 (they have 11 seats).  Tom Perriello claimed victory on November 7 and neither of the main candidates has had a change in vote totals since November 10.  Newspaper accounts say that everybody's waiting until the state posts official results on November 24.  Why?  I check the totals at least twice a day.  At least the California and Alaska totals change.  Ohio, Virginia, and Minnesota just hang out in limbo land.

VA
as I said in my comment just above, all ballots have been counted in virginia so the next step is the recount... which can't start before results are certified. so no need to check results in VA-05 for a long while...

[ Parent ]
Typo
My bad.  The real question in VA-05 seems to be if Goode is going to drag this out by asking for a recount.  By all accounts this is unlikely to change anything, but will prolong the inevitable.  At least George Allen had the good grace to bow out after knowing it was over within 48 hours. (And if my memory serves, I think Allen was probably closer to Webb proportionately speaking than Goode is to Perriello at this point).

[ Parent ]
He was and since nearly all VA ballots
Are cast electronically there is an even lower error rate than in any paper system (I know I know about the fraud but the point remains)...

[ Parent ]
AK Sen.
When are the results coming in from today's ballot count? Shouldn't they be finished already with the ones they were going to count today?

They are like four hours behind the East Coast
It's only 3:21 or so there.

correct
Right. But shouldn't they at least be finished with the ones they were supposed to count in the morning, and then early in the afternoon?

[ Parent ]
Update:
http://www.elections.alaska.go...
Begich: 47.4% (137,527)
Stevens: 47.04% (136,446)

That's a bigger lead than the last I had heard.  I think they counted around 13K votes?

[ Parent ]
Around 9,100
Votes according to the schedule posted earlier in the day, which would be the final total of the day as the increase amounts to that number. Not much of an increase for Mayor Begich.

[ Parent ]
Most from Mat-Su
" About 510 questioned ballots from Southeast, the Peninsula and Southwest Alaska

About 5,180 absentee and questioned ballots from Mat-Su

Questioned, absentee ballots from Richardson Highway and the Interior

About 3,600 absentee and questioned ballots from Western and Northwest Alaska, and North Slope "

[ Parent ]
the rest of CA-04
If the votes were from Nevada County today, it's dim for Charlie Brown.  There are still votes from Placer County (very GOP) to be counted.  Many of the mountain counties counts are complete.

So at least the carpetbagger has found a home!

Was that all of the votes from Nevada county?
If there are more to be counted from Nevada, Brown has a chance.

[ Parent ]
margin is 691
back in the wrong direction

[ Parent ]
Darnit.
We looked.

Bill Posey is not half-alligator...and is outclassed by Davy Crockett anyway: http://www.washingtonmonthly.c...

[ Parent ]
Butte, Placer and Sierra outstanding
Placer doesnt seem to be that GOP, McClintock won 50,8/49,2

[ Parent ]
They're Both Scheduled To Attend Freshman Orientation?
That's just awkward. If they run into each other...

Not that uncommon for undecided races

622 behind now
Pretty sure he won't make it.
