KY-Sen: Still Close, R2K Says

by: James L.

Wed Oct 22, 2008 at 8:13 PM EDT

Research 2000 has been working double-time in Kentucky lately; they ran a poll for Daily Kos last week showing McConnell up by four, and they turned right around and fielded another poll for the Lexington Herald-Leader (10/19-21, likely voters, 10/15-16 in parens):

Bruce Lunsford (D): 43 (42)
Mitch McConnell (R-inc): 47 (46)
(MoE: ±4%)

Virtually unchanged. Once again, Lunsford still faces the same problem: while McConnell's unfavorables are high, so are his. Which man will they dislike more on election day?

OT: Another brilliant Grayson Ad (FL-08)

This guy never wastes an add.  They are always hard hitting.

Amen
Bill Hillsman is the best out there (Grayson's ad maker, also made ads for Wellstone's first run)

High unfavorables
Part of the high unfavorables for both might be due to (my impression at least) that Kentucky votes are a politically crabby bunch.  I've noticed over the years that in more than most places, both D's and R's in Kentucky have a "screw all of them" mentality (kind of like New Jersey voters seem to have).  And it doesn't help that their last two governors before now were mired in scandal -- one for cheating on his wife and helping out his girlfriend, and the other for being an all-around crook.

Usually a honeymoon period
Kentucky does seem like one of those states where no elected official is very popular, though they usually get re-elected.  New Jersey is the most notorious state for giving officials low approvals yet re-electing them every time.

what? What happened to Steve Beshear
I had such hopes he would be a popular figure to be a face for the Democratic party and lead us back to all around gains.

Call no man happy until he is dead-Aeschylus

Yeah right
he's done a terrible job and has Bush range approval ratings.

SurveyUSA disagrees.
50-43 per 9/20.

I think the negatives here have to do with McConnell and Lunsford themselves. Lunsford certainly carries plenty of baggage in with him...

Hmm
A rebound then. I know his post legislative session numbers where bad. Glad to see he has recovered some.

Not Steve Beshear
I was referring to Patton and Fletcher, the two guys who were before him.  I think Beshear still has the potential to be a successful governor.  He's not exactly loved in Kentucky, as sort-of seen as a "been around forever" type guy, etc. -- but as long as he doesn't do anything illegal or sleazy, he'll have done better than the two guys who came before him!

As lame as Lunsford may be...
I think Mitch McConnell may turn out to be LAMER. When the best news that could possibly come out is a 7% lead from Rasmussen (with McBush being up by only 8%), McConnell looks to be in deep sh*t now. Bluegrass State voters may finally be ready to ditch Mitch. ;-)

C4O Democrats: A Place for All Democrats

I hope so, but
Jim Bunning was sinking like a stone shortly before the election a few years back, but hung on anyway.

I would so love to take down Mitch McConnell. Talk about creating chaos within the minority caucus.

I'm Less Confident About This Race...
...than most of the other battlegrounds.  I'm more inclined to see Musgrove win Mississippi due to a high black turnout.  Lunsford's bounce seems to be directly related to McConnell's high-profile role in the bailout, and I suspect that'll wear off by election day, particular with the assistance of coattails from McCain among the "late deciders".  If it was Lunsford vs. Bunning this year, however, you gotta figure Lunsford would be ahead by 15 points.

the incumbent!
and as long as mcconnell doesn't get over 48, i think lunsford wins.  i read someone - maybe rothenburg - say that he didn't think kentucky would elect a liberal like LUNSFORD!?  if lunsford is a liberal, zell miller is a mainstream democrat.  lunsford endorsed crazy right evangelist ernie fletcher against the democrat.

he's a bastard, but he's our bastard.  GO ERNIE!

No need to be worried about Martin's fundraising...
http://www.politico.com/blogs/...

Former President Bill Clinton will be in Atlanta Saturday night to host a fundraiser for Jim Martin, the Democrat seeking to oust Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.).

"I would be honored if you would join President Clinton and me this Saturday night for a reception to help raise the funds we need to stay on television and share our vision of the future with Georgia's voters," the Martin campaign wrote in a fundraising appeal.

WJC is in town and he's hitting Atlanta!

No
that means he's pretty desperate and needs cash bad.

Martin is very underfunded. He needs money.
